CPFA's Partnership with amfAR, The American Foundation for AIDS Research
With 40 million people worldwide and more than one million Americans living with HIV/AIDS, our collective efforts are more important than ever. Certainly, we have made good progress. With the help of CPFA, amfAR’s investments in research over more than 20 years have paid rich dividends in the form of new and more effective anti-HIV drugs, improved understanding of the mechanisms of HIV infection, and progress towards new methods of prevention. More resources will bring more breakthroughs.Yet, in spite of these wonderful advances, we have not been able to make a dent in the 40,000 new HIV infections that occur in the United States each year. Attitudes and behaviors have proven stubbornly resistant to change. Stigma surrounding HIV infection continues to plague individuals and communities worldwide — including the U.S. We must work together to combat this stigma and the complacency about HIV/AIDS that is so common among our nation’s young people. Every voice counts.
